The truth is that, the story surrounding the execution of Abubakar Shekau has been really confusing.
The above pic shows when Shekau was captured by Nigerian military before his execution (pictured below).
However, he is the man that has been operating behind the name Abubakar Shekau who masterminded the killings and slaughtering of hundreds of Nigerians by bomb blasts and beheading.
It actually looks like he has been killed by the Nigerian troops, if the above photos are anything to go by.
