According to reports, the Brazilian Federal Police are increasingly worried that over 250 Ghanaian Football supporters who came to cheer their team in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil have refused to go back to their country following their nation's exit from the tournament early in the first round.

The supporters have resfused to return to Ghana instead requesting asylum after they gained entry to the country using tourists visas. They are claiming that they are Muslims escaping inter-religious coflicts in Ghana and have boldly filed applications in the Brazilian city of Caxias do Sul.

According to Brazilian police reports, an estimated figure of over 1,000 Ghanaian supporters are expected to join the queue once the tournament ends on Sunday, July 13. They are all expecting the Brazilian government to grant them the rights to legally live and work in the South American country.

According to a police official who spoke to BBC,
“Asylum cannot be requested at a Brazilian embassy. The asylum seeker must be in the country to apply. We have hundreds of Syrian refugees in Brazil at the moment in the same situation.”
Regarding the situation, Felix Kwakye Ofosu who is a Minister in Ghana issued a statement denying the said religious conflicts in his country. Part of his statement said,
"The basis for this alleged request is completely false as no religious conflicts is taking place in Ghana. Ghana’s mission in Brazil has been instructed to liaise with the Brazilian authorities to investigate the matter.”
An incredible situation indeed.

  1. In as much as I'm a Ghanaian, I'm deeply disappointed and it's a disgrace to us and Africa as a whole.
