Passengers Stranded As Cameroon Shuts Sea Border Against Nigeria Amid Ebola Fear

In a bid to avoid the Ebola Viral Disease (EVD), Cameroon has shut its sea border against Nigeria.

According to reports, passengers were on Saturday stranded at the Nigeria Inland Waterways Jetty in Calabar, Cross River State, as they were unable to get vessels to Cameroon.

One of the stranded passengers, Mr Obi, who wore a long face said:
“I am please suggesting to the government of Nigeria to consider this seriously. Otherwise, Nigerian traders who do business in Cameroon will suffer.”
He went on to suggest that the Nigerian Federal Government mount an equipped health check system on the border as it would go a long way to assure the Cameroonian government of the health safety of the intending passengers.
“I am suggesting that the government should take serious measure on health screening; so that the people with good health can go about their businesses,” he added.
Mr Obi had to return back to his home in Anambra State as he could not make the trip to Cameroon.

Meanwhile, another Nigeria-Cameroon businessman said, Mr Austin Chukwu said:
“I don’t know what the Federal Government is doing about it. We are using this medium to call on the Nigeria government to intervene in this matter to alleviate the sufferings on the masses, especially the Igbo traders.
“As you can see, most of these passengers are now stranded because the Cameroon/Nigeria border has been sealed off for fear of Ebola. Some of the Cameroonians are here. They are also stranded; no vessel is coming in, no vessel is going out.”
